Four Ways To Prevent Chigger Bites
When you spend time outdoors, especially in grassy or wooded areas, you’re likely to experience chigger bites at one time or another. But there are some simple steps you can take to make yourself a less easy target for the little red bug. Here are four of our best tips for preventing chigger bites:
1. Wear proper clothing. It might be hard, especially in warmer weather, but whenever possible wear long pants and long sleeve shirts. The less skin you have exposed the better. Thick socks and high boots are great for keeping the chiggers out. And if at all possible, tuck your pant legs into your boots as well.
2. Check the temperature. If you want to avoid chigger bites completely, check the temperature before you go out. Chiggers do not bite at temperatures cooler than about 60° F (15.5° C). And better yet, they don’t even live in areas where the temperatures are higher than 99° F (37.2° C). So if you can take that kind of heat, you won’t have to worry about chiggers at all.
3. Use insect repellant. Any insect repellant that works on mosquitos will also repel chiggers when applied to skin and clothing. Look for one with DEET as the active ingredient for the best results.
4. Wash up when you’re done. When you get back from your outing, you must wash yourself thoroughly with soap and water. This can help remove any chiggers that may have hitched a ride home on your skin. Also, be sure to toss all of your outdoor clothes into the washer immediately, and wash them all in hot water.
